New creative team for HAWKEYE announced! Coming this march, it's by Jeff Lemire (hes apparently the master of archers?) & Ramon Perez. Lemire says he cant hope to duplicate Fraction/Ajas success, just hopes to do the best he can. Texas Attorney General tells Houston city hall: Stop bullying Christians | Fox News

Thats the bottom line of a harshly-worded letter written by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to Houston City Attorney David Feldman. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT Feldmans office sent subpoenas to five Houston pastors last month demanding that they turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality and gender identity issues. They also wanted sermons or correspondence that referenced Annise Parker, the citys first openly lesbian mayor. Im not buying the mayors so-called change of heart not one bit. The subpoenas were issued in a response to a lawsuit related to Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), also known as the Bathroom Bill. Abbott called the subpoenas aggressive and invasive and said they show no regard for the very serious First Amendment considerations at stake. Whether you intend it to be so or not, your action is a direct assault on the religious liberty guaranteed by the First Amendment, Abbott wrote, demanding that the subpoenas be rescinded. You should immediately instruct your lawyers to withdraw the citys subpoenas, he added. Late Wednesday, the city issued a statement to the Wall Street Journal : Mayor Parker agrees with those who are concerned about the city legal departments subpoenas for pastors sermons. The subpoenas were issued by pro bono attorneys helping the city prepare for the trial regarding the petition to repeal the new Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) in January. Neither the mayor nor City Attorney David Feldman were aware the subpoenas had been issued until yesterday. Both agree the original documents were overly broad.

LGBT Catholics hold vigil for church leaders - News - The State Journal-Register - Springfield, IL

But given that we expected nothing, it is huge. She added that even though Catholics arent the only Christians by a long shot, the decisions made by such a monolithic institution affect other denominations also grappling with how to minister to the LGBT community. National LGBTQ (queer) Task Force executive director the Rev. Darlene Nipper also praised the discussion taking place during the synod. The Vatican discussion is a step in the right direction of tone. We look forward to the day that the Vaticans new tone produces substantive change in doctrine and practice, Nipper wrote in a statement. Page 2 of 2 - But Nipper also criticized the Vatican paper, saying it does not reflect an appreciation of and the diversity within our LGBTQ community with gender identity being totally missing in the text. And it is a very far distance from recognizing marriage equality. Still, reaction to the paper locally was favorable. This is fantastic, Buff Carmichael, 67, of Springfield said after he read a few paragraphs of the paper with his husband, Jerry Bowman, 59. The two were married Sept. 20 after 22 years together.

Microsoft Gender Equality: After CEO Satya Nadella's Gaffe, Company To Examine Gender Pay Gap, Male Culture

Microsoft CEO Women I'm pretty sure he's going to be thinking really hard about pay equity." It was Klawe, a longtime campaigner for women in tech, who asked Nadella the question onstage on Thursday that led to his remarks, and she has since led the company's efforts at damage limitation. Klawe, 63, said she has been pressing for hiring and promoting women at Microsoft since she joined the board five years ago, but the issue of pay raises for women had not been discussed by the board. "I suspect it might be now," she said. Klawe pointed to the recruitment of Peggy Johnson from Qualcomm as head of business development in September as a recent success, but she conceded there have been backward steps, notably the ousting of Tami Reller and Julie Larson-Green, who ran the flagship Windows unit until a shakeup in 2013. "I did feel badly that we had Tami and Julie on the executive team and then had two fewer people. But it really had to do with what made sense in terms of who was the right person for which job," said Klawe. "I'm sure we'll see more women in those levels." Reller has since left Microsoft, while Larson-Green is responsible for the overall look and feel of Microsoft's software services. BOYS' CLUB Microsoft has never been a beacon of diversity. Karin Carter, who worked at the company in its heyday from 1983 until 1997 and went on to write a book about the experience, said there were only five or so women programmers at Microsoft when she joined, with the vast majority of women in support positions. "The first time my fellow administrative assistant and I worked all night to get materials ready for a meeting, we got roses from the vice president of the international group," said Carter. "My first thought was, 'Roses? How about money?'" Today the numbers are slightly better. Microsoft's 15-strong senior leadership team, which runs the company day to day, has three women: Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood; Lisa Brummel, head of human resources; and recent hire Johnson.

Lgbt Catholics Hold Vigil For Church Leaders - News - The State Journal-register - Springfield, Il

#Gamergate Trolls Aren't Ethics Crusaders; They're a Hate Group

#Gamergate Trolls Aren The two were married Sept. 20 after 22 years together. In 1973 when they rewrote the catechism, one priest told us the church took a giant leap out of the 13th century into the 15th century. This maybe moves them to the 17th century, Carmichael said. On a scale of one to 10, we have a bishop locally whos a one. Or a negative-one. When the church as a whole is making steps like this to win us, (Springfield Bishop Thomas John Paprocki) is going the opposite direction, Carmichael said. Its obvious that the largest national organization for LGBT rights has identified Springfield as a sore spot in the relationship between the LGBT community and the church and has come to put a Band-Aid on this spot. That speaks poorly for Catholicism in Springfield and begs for a cure. Paprocki, an outspoken opponent of LGBT rights in the church, did not attend Mondays vigil and declined an interview. He said in a statement that the teaching of the Catholic church on this matter is clear and well-known throughout the Diocese of Springfield and Illinois. Not everyone reacted kindly to the vigil. An elderly passer-by who left before he could be identified became angry when he learned what the group was praying for outside the cathedral.

Rather they recruit those who are most vulnerable and indoctrinate them in the process of hate." Social-Psychological Techniques: After the group has been recruited, they develop a set of mechanisms to keep them confident as a group, spread their message, and maintain group order. Propaganda is the most vital tool in this process. It educates new members in the accepted ideals, reinforces the ideal to existing members, and provides them with convenient methods with which to spread the group's message to those outside. Woolf and Huslitzer talk about propaganda as that which is used to "increase the 'otherness' of the object of hate." Anyone can view a log of original visual content surrounding #Gamergate here , and the propagandistic slant is extreme: #Gamergate's primary methods of disseminating information have been in the form of aggressively doctrinaire images, Youtube videos, and pastebins. In a cursory look through the 8chan boards, I found these images: "Gaming is not a crime," for example, suggests that #Gamergate members consider themselves under siege; the image of movement mascot Vivian James, accompanied by a mantra of all the horrible things #Gamergate claims not to be, emphasizes that her iconography supports integrity in journalism and women in gaming. James, we are to understand, epitomizes #Gamergate despite her womanhood. The social emotions prompted by these differing slogans show exactly how the ideas of #Gamergate have evolved and taken hold. They feel the need to defend themselves from those who accuse them of being elitist, sexist, homophobic, or bigoted. Their intended public image is that they are first and foremost fighting for "integrity in journalism" and being "supportive of women in gaming." This is the image they want to present to the world and each other. The problem with that presentation, both to others and themselves, is that it contradicts the true, underlying feelings they harbor. This is shown in a comment about a response to my survey: In contrast to the propaganda they're producing and distributing to create the "believed lie" about their cause, this comment is a window into the group's honest attitudes.

More Than Lgbt: A Student Scientist's Journey At Centenary College

Eli Capello When someone transitions, they work with a therapist to describe why they feel male or female without using body parts. You have to become an articulate person to describe something as complex as gender." Capello is as passionate about gender equality as he is about LGBT issues. Much of his impressive science career has been devoted to eradicating sexism in research. In his latest project he produced a manuscript with former Centenary professor Greg Butcher that identifies a gender bias in Parkinsons Disease research. Despite Parkinson's being a disease that affects a very sex-specific part of the brain, their findings showed that female rats were used far less than male rats in studies. Only 20 percent of male scientists used both male and female rats in their research while 50 percent of female scientists utilized both genders. "Because female rats have a pretty regular cycle, some scientists think it's a waste of time to use them for research and that it probably 'wont make a difference,'" said Capello. "But nowhere else in science would we just assume something doesn't matter. We would test it." In another project, Capello was urged to collect data on both male and female oxycodone addicts but found it challenging to find statistics for women. Citing a recent incident involving the FDA's failing to revise Ambien dosages for women who are accidentally overdosing on the sleep-aid, Capello sees taking the physiological differences of men and women into account as a big issue in scientific research. The lack of female testing is not surprising to Capello considering the gender disparity in science disciplines.

Intel issues apology regarding its advertising and 'GamerGate' - Yahoo News

Intel removed advertising from Gamasutra on Wednesday, a decision that attracted a great deal of attention, including from mainstream non-gaming media. The chip-maker had been targeted by an campaign against Gamasutra and its editor-at-large Leigh Alexander, who has been critical of the treatment of women both in video games and in the industry developing them. GamerGate arose this summer out of a series of controversies involving members of the games media and a buse directed at some independent games developers . Though it claims to be a protest against corruption in the gaming press, some of its loudest voices have attacked the work and legitimacy of Alexander and other women involved in games criticism and development. She and others such as Anita Sarkeesian, the creator of the "Tropes vs. Women in Video Games" documentary series, also have faced online harrassment and threats. Critics of Intel called its removal of ads from Gamasutra an endorsement of antifeminist bullying; Intel's statement Friday insisted it is not, though it has not resumed advertising with Gamasutra. "We recognize that our action inadvertently created a perception that we are somehow taking sides in an increasingly bitter debate in the gaming community," Intel wrote. "That was not our intent, and that is not the case. When it comes to our support of equality and women, we want to be very clear: Intel believes men and women should be treated the same. "And, diversity is an integral part of our corporate strategy and vision with commitments to improve the diversity of our workforce," Intel continued.

Only Yes-means-yes Passes; Texas Clinics Closed | Womens Enews

A study found a decrease in women in high venture capital positions and in the venture capital world altogether, Businessweek reported Sept. 30. Only 15 percent of around 7,000 venture capital-backed companies had a female executive and only 2.7 percent had female chief executives, according to the study. The proportion of female venture capital partners has also dropped from 10 percent in 1999 to 6 percent in 2014. Israel's national airline, El Al, has been criticized for allowing ultra-orthodox Jewish men to disrupt flights by refusing to be seated next to women. A petition on change.org is demanding that the carrier "stop the bullying, intimidation and discrimination against women on your flights," The Guardian reported Sept. 30. In the United Kingdom, more than a million women are denied pills that could halve their chance of developing breast cancer because of red tape, experts warn, The Daily Mail reported Sept. 29. Breast Cancer Campaign research estimates that if women were properly screened and those at risk were offered the drugs, nearly 4,000 cases a year could be prevented. Noted: A group of women blocked Istanbul's Bosporus Bridge in Turkey on Oct.

Gov. Scott Walker, Mary Burke and others react to same-sex marriage decision | FOX6Now.com

The right to marry the person you love is a basic freedom that should not be denied to anyone. All of our neighbors should have the opportunity to live their lives freely and happily with equal protection under the law. While Gov. Walker and Wisconsin Republicans have time and again callously fought to deny marriage equality in our state, Wisconsin Democrats are proud to join people across Wisconsin in standing tall in the face of continued moral injustice. With todays decision, ideological forces in Wisconsin and other states across our nation will no longer promote inequality, foster discrimination, or unconstitutionally limit our rights and our freedoms. Today, I am calling on Gov. Walker and Wisconsin Republicans to no longer stand divisively in the way of equality and fairness for our fellow Wisconsinites. Statement by Wisconsin State Senator Mark Miller (D): Today the United States Supreme Court has made it possible for all citizens of Wisconsin to be equal in the eyes of the law. Wisconsin is now among the states on the right side of history, where the freedom of every person to marry who they love, regardless of sexual orientation is protected. But the fight is not over until every American citizen is seen as equal. I look forward to the day when marriage equality will finally be the law throughout the United States. Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate issued the following statement: Today we call on Governor Walker to not just say he wont stand in the way of equality, but to take action to reassure all Wisconsin families that he wont oppose their constitutional right to equality.Scott Walker must state clearly and unequivocally that he will do everything in his power to enforce the law of the land and ensure that every Wisconsinite is free to marry the person they love and he must back those words up with strong actions.
