At Vanderbilt she is the founder and co-director of the Vanderbilt program for LGBTI Health, an innovative effort to improve the care of LGBTI patients. Eckstrand said diversity in medical education has evolved since she first arrived at Vanderbilt in 2008. Basically, medical education has paralleled the national stage on LGBT issues, Eckstrand said. As more states are eliminating discriminatory policies, passing same-sex marriage laws and moving toward equality for all people, medical education has taken responsibility for its role in educating the next generation of physicians to provide comprehensive care for LGBT patients. Now is the right time for a transformation in medical education, she said. The emphasis that academic medicine has placed on providing comprehensive and patient-centered care to LGBT patients is phenomenal. Its an exciting time to be a part of this growth, Eckstrand noted that health care disparities in both the delivery of services as well as in outcomes within the LGBT community prompted the AAMC to create a team to explore the need for improved provider care. Tempe is leading the state in terms of leadership on this issue; Tempe is leading the country on this issue, said Sheila Kloefkorn, a member of the Human Rights Campaigns board of directors, at the conference. While Tempe, Phoenix and Tucson received perfect scores on the MEIs charting, several Arizona cities were rated below the nations average. The town of Gilbert scored a 43, Glendale earned a 36 and Peoria received a 33. Despite the divergent ratings throughout the state, Arizona received an average MEI score of 68, which is above the nation average. Woods said citizens and lawmakers of Tempe have shown their support for the LGBT community through legislation, along with the reaction to that process. When the nondiscrimination ordinance came before the council for two public hearings in 2014, not a single resident came to speak in opposition. That combined with the overwhelming passage of Prop. 475 in August speaks volumes about the incredible people we have in Tempe and about the values that exist here in our community, he said. Hannah Richard, who identifies as queer, says that she is proud of the steps Tempe has made, but acknowledges that there is still more to change to come. I think things are finally moving in the right direction. Its really important to be LGBT-friendly in a progressive country, but its especially important in a conservative state like Arizona, she said.

These pressures were amplified in the weeks after my coming out, with friends and family stating You cant be gay, you dont know how to dress and You do science, thats not what gay people do. Indeed, when I looked around at the science fairs that I was so fond of, I began to realize that I had never met a fellow gay scientist, and some science fair participants would regale me with how homosexuality was a crime in their countries. These pressures, combined with the confusion associated with coming out publicly and the social stress characteristic of middle school, created a deadly cocktail, which resulted in me becoming increasingly depressed, with my academic and social lives taking a tailspin. Fortunately, my story does not end in tragedy; I did not lose my life to my depression, nor was I permanently harmed, but nevertheless, the experience has remained with me. Eventually, through extensive online research, I discovered my first role model in science who also was gay: Alan Turing. I quickly became fascinated with the stories of how he thwarted Nazi Germany in World War II and laid the groundwork for modern-day computers. Through his groundbreaking work and indefatigable spirit, he was able to shorten the length of the way by several years, and save hundreds of thousands of lives in the process. However, despite his extraordinary contributions to science, he lived in a time when homosexuality was a criminal offense, and, as a result, he was persecuted by authorities. This witch hunt resulted in Turings suicide, 16 days before his 42nd birthday. Nonetheless, he became my idol, and I incessantly filled the ears of my parents and friends with stories and facts from his life. But while my straight friends had contemporary role models such as Jane Goodall, Sylvia Earle, and Stephen Hawking, I only had one who was dead and from a completely different era in terms of LGBT rights. A modern LGBT scientist role model simply does not exist.

FREE & LOCAL Tempe earns high marks for LGBT support By Kaitlyn Thompson, Special to Tribune East Valley Tribune The city of Tempe has become a national front-runner in LGBT equality after scoring a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. The Municipal Equality Index (MEI) is a rating system the organization uses to evaluate cities on how they create equal opportunities for the LGBT community. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and the acronym has extended to include queer, question, asexual and intersex. The MEI has 47 criteria, all of which fall under one of six categories: nondiscrimination laws, relationship recognition, municipalitys employment policies, contracting nondiscrimination requirements, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement and municipal leadership on matters of equality. Only 38 cities out of a total of 353 that were indexed nationwide achieved a perfect score of 100, including Tempe, Phoenix and Tucson. Here in Tempe, we have a long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion. In 1999, we were one of the first cities to provide domestic partner benefits for our employees, and just this year, we approved an anti-discrimination ordinance and Tempe voters cemented it into place by voting overwhelmingly to add anti-discrimination language to our city charter, said Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell during a press conference on Nov.12. The Tempe City Council has worked to increase its MEI rating after achieving a score of 72 in 2013, the first year it received a rating. When we first learned of our score of 72 in the 2013 Municipal Equality Index, we immediately set out to understand what we needed to do to commit real tangible improvement. Perhaps this speaks more about our society as a whole; however, the exaltation of youth and looks over brains is far more rampant in LBGT culture. Just as other people project onto us, we can be guilty of allowing our sexuality to signify who we are, rather than our identities. We become identified by who we like rather than who we are. This is all too apparent through our media presence in TV shows and movies. Members of our community are represented in all professions, from social activists to scientists. We are lawyers, actors, and doctors who happen to be LGBT as opposed to LGBT people who happen to be lawyers, actors, and doctors. Such a distinction, while subtle, is critical to realize because it is we as a community that create societys perception of us. We can choose to continue to be pigeonholed as a singular persona or we can choose to allow ourselves to diverge from this path and create role models for all LGBT youth, regardless of what profession they wish to pursue. The sacrifice of our intellectual diversity is one that is not necessary and simply not acceptable. If we truly desire equality in our society, then we must break free from our stereotypes, making our foremost feature not our sexuality, but our potential to improve the world. We must strive to make all people in the LGBT community feel welcome, not just those who know how to match clothes and create a fabulous dinner party.

Tempe is leading the state in terms of leadership on this issue; Tempe is leading the country on this issue, said Sheila Kloefkorn, a member of the Human Rights Campaigns board of directors, at the conference. While Tempe, Phoenix and Tucson received perfect scores on the MEIs charting, several Arizona cities were rated below the nations average. The town of Gilbert scored a 43, Glendale earned a 36 and Peoria received a 33. Despite the divergent ratings throughout the state, Arizona received an average MEI score of 68, which is above the nation average. Woods said citizens and lawmakers of Tempe have shown their support for the LGBT community through legislation, along with the reaction to that process. When the nondiscrimination ordinance came before the council for two public hearings in 2014, not a single resident came to speak in opposition. Thats up from 9.3 percent during the Bloomberg era but still well short of their share of the population. Alas, staffing decisions have apparently become a numbers game. Appointments are judged by how closely they reflect the citys ethnic make-up rather than how well-suited candidates are for their jobs. This doesnt exactly inspire confidence in city government. Yet it is de Blasio himself who has made this the standard. We want to make sure that we have a government that looks like New York City, promised the then-incoming mayor at the Somos El Futuro conference in Puerto Rico just days after winning election last year.

For example, Fort Worth received full points in 2013 for the Fort Worth school districts anti-bullying policy that specifically includes protection for gender identity. In 2014, however, the city got no points in that category because not all the school districts within the city limits have the same enumerated policy, and in changing criteria this year, the Human Rights Campaign said all school districts in the city must have such policies for the city to receive credit. But Dallas, where not all school districts in the city have such anti-bullying policies, received full credit in that category. They gave those same points to Dallas who has the same issue that we would, so I dont know that there are errors, but I think it was applied differently, said Rush. Xavier Persad, legislative counsel for the Human Rights Campaign, said in an email that Dallas received the anti-bullying points because over 90 percent of students attend schools in districts that expressly cover sexual orientation and gender identity. The organizations scoring criteria , however, say cities will receive credit only if all schools within city limits have enumerated anti-bullying policies. Henderson said: It makes it look like our anti-bullying policies evaporated.

The company also fails to offer domestic partner benefits, and it lacks an LGBT employee group. Other Memphis companies on the list scored as follows: First Horizon National Corp. (75), Unum Group (60), and International Paper (45). Nationally, a record 366 businesses scored perfect 100s. The only Tennessee company to score a 100 was Nissan North America, Inc. in Smyrna. FREE & LOCAL Tempe earns high marks for LGBT support By Kaitlyn Thompson, Special to Tribune East Valley Tribune The city of Tempe has become a national front-runner in LGBT equality after scoring a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaigns Municipal Equality Index. The Municipal Equality Index (MEI) is a rating system the organization uses to evaluate cities on how they create equal opportunities for the LGBT community. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and the acronym has extended to include queer, question, asexual and intersex. The MEI has 47 criteria, all of which fall under one of six categories: nondiscrimination laws, relationship recognition, municipalitys employment policies, contracting nondiscrimination requirements, inclusiveness of city services, law enforcement and municipal leadership on matters of equality. Only 38 cities out of a total of 353 that were indexed nationwide achieved a perfect score of 100, including Tempe, Phoenix and Tucson. Here in Tempe, we have a long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion. In 1999, we were one of the first cities to provide domestic partner benefits for our employees, and just this year, we approved an anti-discrimination ordinance and Tempe voters cemented it into place by voting overwhelmingly to add anti-discrimination language to our city charter, said Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell during a press conference on Nov.12. The Tempe City Council has worked to increase its MEI rating after achieving a score of 72 in 2013, the first year it received a rating. Tech companies like Facebook and Google lead the way in delivering LGBT equality in the workplace

These are the findings reported in the thirteenth edition of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundations Corporate Equality Index . The HRC rates workplaces on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender inclusion and equality, and this year's report shows that there is now greater awareness and understanding of the transgender community. The index rates companies using a variety of factors including the presence of non-discriminatory policies, the existence of transgender-inclusion healthcare, and whether or not there are guidelines in place to encourage transgender inclusion. This year there are a record number of businesses attaining a 100 percent rating, and 14 of these fall into the hardware, software and data services areas of the tech sector. Joining the companies with a perfect score this year are Facebook and Yelp, and Adobe makes an impressive improvement from 90 to 100 percent. Facebook had previously managed to upset the LGBT community with its real names policy. Deena Fidas, director of the HRC Foundation's Workplace Equality Program, said: Long viewed as thought leaders in business innovation, it's no surprise that computer tech companies continue to be strong leaders in LGBT workplace inclusion. This year, we welcomed two new computer software and hardware companies to the CEI, continuing evidence of the sector's commitment to fairness. 91 percent of Fortune 500 companies include reference to sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policies, while just 61 percent make reference to gender identity.

They really have no choice but to put Tony the Tiger forward as the representative of Kelloggs making this statement wear your stripes with pride. But we do not approve of charging children with this messages that their parents might not approve. The Kellogg company is standing behind the ad. A celebration day Halsteads announcement comes three months after an outside investigation by Coleman & Associates into complaints filed by three black officers against the police department found no hard evidence of racial discrimination, but noted instances of hostile and harassing behavior. While the head of the Fort Worth Black Law Enforcement Association called for Halstead to be fired, the City Council and Cooke gave the chief a vote of confidence. Halstead refuted suggestions that his retirement was based on conflicts with Price or the City Council, calling Tuesday a celebration day. I know a lot of people talked about the chief is resigning, the chief is being forced out. And I saw a whole barrage of media stories. Price said progress on the 3-E Action Plan would move forward, despite Halsteads resignation. That is a plan we had already started to move forward with and we continue to move it forward, Price said. It is an outgrowth of the Coleman report and we dont want to delay on that. Leaving a legacy Halsteads first year on the job was ripe with conflict. In April 2009, Michael Jacobs, 18, died shortly after being shocked twice with a Taser by officer Stephanie Phillips. Halstead said Phillips violated police department protocol by deploying her Taser for longer than the five second round the first trigger pull lasted 49 seconds. In response, Halstead successfully lobbied Taser International to add a safety feature that automatically cuts offs the charge five seconds after being deployed. Following the Taser incident came the controversial bar check at the Rainbow Lounge, a gay bar, that resulted in injuries to two bar patrons, a handful of arrests and accusations of police brutality. I had absolutely no idea that that first year would have been that challenging, Halstead said.

So how much attention do cities actually pay to these rankings? A lot. When the civil rights organization ranked Tampa as the leading city in Florida last fall, officials on this side of the bay took notice. In the 2013 rankings, St. Petersburg got 66 points. Our neighbors across the bay got 89. So a couple months after taking office, Kriseman's administration announced it was designating people on his staff to form better relationships with the LGBT community. Officials figures they could get five more points on the equality study by having an LGBT liaison in the mayor's office, and eight more if a similar position is created at the Police Department.

Even though the state has legalized gay marriage, churches dont necessarily have to perform them. In a survey of 118 Elon students, 62 percent of respondents said if gay marriage is legal in a state, churches should have the right to refuse performing marriages. Thirty-five percent said they shouldnt be able to refuse, and three percent said they dont believe in gay marriage. Bosch said in an ideal world, it would be necessary for churches to accept people on the LGBTQIA spectrum, but it would create problems now. That could mean destructive things from the congregation when a sweeping change is made, he said. It can really feel like we need to have a huge backlash or an upheaval of a system, because people will feel like someone is messing with their god. That can solidify their deeply held aversions. Changes nationally The nation has seen steady growth of Open and Affirming congregations since the movement began. In 1983, the United Church of Christ Coalition for LGBT Concerns, an independent organization providing support for LGBTQIA people, proposed a covenant to the General Senate calling for an endorsement of a program that encouraged congregations to Open and Affirm. It did not pass. Two years later, the same covenant reopened on the floor and was adopted. Since 1985, 1,217 churches 23 percent of congregations across the country have become Open and Affirming.

Out of the organizations surveyed, 36 percent of women are at the managerial level, 26 percent are in senior management and only 19 percent are executives. To get those numbers more balanced, Mercer found that it isn't enough to just provide women with programs like flexible work schedules and leave policies. The only way to have true change is for management to make female leadership -- and equal pay -- a priority. "A significant number of CEOs and very senior male executives say the most important thing is that their senior executives actually understand the economic development of having a diverse workforce and are held accountable," said Pat Milligan, president of Mercer's North America region. She said teams should be expected to hire and develop their workforce to be as equal as possible, and that management should treat those expectations just like how employees have to hit sales or profit goals. "They don't let people get away with not moving their needle," Milligan said. There are some corporate bright spots including American Express, Kimberly Clark, Avon and L'Oreal. At Kimberly Clark, for example, there's an entire team devoted to diversity analytics that looks at the participation and promotion rate for women employees in teams around the world. American Express has initiatives that help women work their way up the ranks, including a mentorship program, workshops and special events. "It's truly seen across the company as a way to drive our business growth," said American Express chief diversity officer Valerie Grillo. About 60 percent of the 50,000 employees at American Express are women.

The practice of women taking their husband's last name originates in patriarchal family systems where women were considered their husband's property, says Laura Hamilton, an associate professor of sociology at UC Merced. Over time, the practice became encoded in U.S. laws. Until the 1980s, some states even denied married women the right to vote unless they took their husband's name. Today, attitudes about name choices run along socio-economic, geographic, religious and political lines, Hamilton says. Not surprisingly, a well-educated woman living in an urban area on the West Coast is more likely to hold less traditional views. Hamilton isn't sure why today's brides are so eager to take their husband's names, though she speculates that some don't feel the same burden of history as women who came of age when women lacked equal access to work, education or property. Adds Tate: "I personally don't believe it's an anti-feminist or conservative movement.

Lorimer in 2001 asked, Could we imagine a new sisters connection, one that had such a robust inventory of the resources Yale women represent (our experiences, talents and interests) that we could call upon one another to help address the larger issues facing our society? The sessions at this years Gender Rules conversation both celebrated gains that have been made in gender diversity on campus and in the broader society and candidly examined areas where equality has not yet been achieved in the academy, in the corporate world, and in the public sector. Speakers also shared strategies to improve access and outcomes, in keeping with the organizers goal not only to expose problems but also to propose solutions. Opened by YaleWomen Chair Laura Grondin 85 and Professor Paula Kavathas, chair of the WFF, the day closed with a conversation on diversity at Yale with President Peter Salovey 86 Ph.D. and Provost Benjamin Polak, who stated, An excellent faculty is a diverse faculty. Catherine Hill 85 Ph.D., president of Vassar College and a trustee of Yale, moderated one session. Hill was one of two Yale alumnae college presidents to return to campus as conference presenters, along with Kathleen McCartney 82 Ph.D., president of Smith College. Alumnae and friends on the faculty of the University of California-Davis, Rutgers, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Yeshiva, and The New School also gave presentations, along with leaders from eBay and the Ms. Foundation for Women, and Yale faculty from the Schools of Law, Management, and Medicine, and the Departments of American Studies, Anthropology, History of Art, Political Science, and Womens, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Miko McGinty 93, 98 M.F.A. was among the many participants who expressed enthusiasm for the event on social media, as she tweeted, A great discussion today about women in leadership roles and the best examples before us!

A 2007 California law, in part geared toward same-sex couples, allowed Melanie Jimenez, 34, to blend her last name with her husband's, Bertram, to create Bermenez. "I identify as Mexican-American, and my husband identifies as Anglo or white," she says. "To us, this choice says equality, 50-50. We have built a foundation of love and friendship on it." A few men have challenged tradition even more by legally taking their wives' last names.
